PRESCHOOL’S Kids Got Talent
La Costa Valley Preschool and Kindergarten’s students have lots of talent. Students at the school have been wowing family members and friends with singing, dancing and acting performances in over 38 shows since 1991. The driving force behind the students is what distinguishes this remarkable nationally accredited and recognized blue ribbon school, as truly exceptional.
Native resident and founder, Cindy Cesena, realized that enhancing a child’s self esteem is imperative. However, creating a curriculum that would instill confidence, would go even further in contributing to a child’s future success. The question she pondered was how to do this. The answer? Put children on a real stage in front of a VIP audience with costumes, props and all the bells, whistles and cameras imaginable. Cesena said watching a child progress from a sometimes timid two year old to a confident kindergartener is magical to witness and has far reaching implications.
Some time ago, while directing San Diego State University’s Campus Children’s Center, Cesena realized that many educators, including preschool teachers, understand the importance of self-confidence, but research indicates that this goal is not always easy to achieve. As students, children are encouraged to ask questions and make presentations in front of others. Those who are able to do so are the most successful. Many, unfortunately are uncomfortable speaking in public and hesitate to share their opinions. This often impedes educations, as well as social or emotional development, and can even influence future careers and financial outcomes.
In the beginning, this answer seemed too simple to Cesena; but she persisted, and the rewards soon became evident. The children’s performances require a significant amount of work and coordination; but those who achieve the most success are the ones who began school early and progressed through kindergarten. By the time these kids present their kindergarten performance, their personal poise is evident. A check of their alumni’s achievements and gratitude is further testimonial to the school’s simple answer to a tough question. “Many parents say they could never do what the kids do; and this is the reason why we do it,” says Cesena.
